We all shed hair everyday and everyone has their "normal" amount of hair shedding.
95% of hair follicles are in the Anagen (growing) phase. That means that there are about 5% in the Telogen (falling out) phase. That is why people shed hair daily.
A client might notice more hair shedding on shampoo days if they go more than 2-3 days without shampooing their hair.
There are many factors that can contribute to 'abnormal' hair shedding, including genetics, hormones, and lifestyle.
2. Abnormal hair shedding is called Telogen effluvium (TE)
This is a scary amount of hair shedding that the client can have concerns about.
This TE shedding will usually last about 3-6 months, but can last longer depending on the trigger that started the hair shedding.
Any hair shedding lasting longer than 6 months is called Chronic Telogen effluvium.
3. There are 100's of reasons that a client can have TE. Here are a few:
Postpartum - 50% of women will have TE during postpartum.
